NeuroSchool launches 3 calls for PhD projects

NeuroMarseille Photo contest: Science & Art
NeuroMarseille takes you on a new adventure at the frontier between Science and Art! Send your most beautiful pictures to reveal the beauty of the living through images made in AMU's neuroscience laboratories. The 20 winning photos will be exhibited in different galleries in the region from May to July 2021. If you are a laureate, you will also receive a large-format framed print of your photo(s).

Science & You
The University of Lorraine will be organising the 3rd edition of the "Science & You" international symposium focusing on scientific culture. A call for papers (by researchers and/or mediators) is online here.

Neurotalk
For the first event of this year, the student society Neuronautes offers you a Neurotalk! This Thursday, Bruno Mazert, AMU teacher-researcher, will present his work for about twenty minutes, then answer your questions. The event is free and online. Are you curious to know more about this part of the nervous system that is still so mysterious? So see you next Thursday, January 14th, at 6 pm!

L3 mobility grants
If the health situation allows it, NeuroSchool offers mobility grants for internships abroad during the summer of 2021 for selected L3 and M1 students. Information and application form on our website.

Get ready for the TOEIC!
NeuroSchool organises and finances a session of the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) for master students (M1 and M2 this year). The exact date of the session will be communicated shortly. A few ideas to prepare you for this session:

Call for projects from the Sud Region " Emploi Jeunes doctorants " (Young doctoral students employment)
The Sud Region proposes a three-year funding scheme to carry out a PhD in partnership with companies and in close connection with strategic sectors. The call for projects is available on the Aix-Marseille University website.

Mathematical Tools for Neuroscience course at Harvard
Numerical data analysis has become a nearly indispensable tool in modern neuroscience. This course aims to equip graduate students with the fundamental mathematical skills in quantitative modeling and data analysis necessary for neuroscience research (and for further computational neuroscience courses). This course is essentially organized into three sections: one on linear algebra, one on probability & statistics, and one on the basics of machine learning. We will also cover some additional topics such as differential equations and dynamical systems).

ENCODS 2021: the 7th Annual European Neuroscience Conference for Graduate Students and Early Career Researchers
The European Conference of PhD Students in Neuroscience (ENCODS) is an initiative to offer young neuroscientists a scientific exchange better suited to their needs than a large-scale event. ENCODS is now organised each year by a different group of international doctoral students and welcomes European doctoral students working in all fields of neuroscience. Registration opens in early 2021.

Romain Bourboulou, former student of the PhD Program at NeuroSchool, is the winner of the "Young Researchers" prize of the Bettencourt Schueller Foundation. He chose to do his postdoc at University College London (UCL) to be in the department at the very origin of the first recording of location cells and to work with John O'Keefe, winner of the 2014 Nobel Prize for the discovery of these cells! But then, who is Romain? What exactly is he working on? And, what are place cells?

Want to get away from it all? Go dance your PhD, create a video of it and upload it to YouTube. The deadline for submission is 29 January 2021.
Rewards for winners range from $500 to $2,000 offered by the AAAS.

Brain Awareness Week: call for volunteers
Participate in Brain Week by intervening in schools with the association Cerveau Point Comm!
The theme in 2021 for high school and college students is "In our brains, neurons... but not only! ». For primary schools the theme is free (emotions, animal brains, the 5 senses, brain and sport....). Interventions in pairs will take place from 8 March to 23 April 2021.
To participate by intervening in the classes, all you have to do is fill in the registration form.

Call for transnational projects FLAG-ERA JTC 2021
The transnational joint call FLAG-ERA (JTC) 2021 supports research projects in synergy with the two FET FLAGSHIP programmes, the Graphene programme and the Human Brain Project. It is designed to extend current programmes with new research contributing to the objectives of the programmes in selected areas. New researchers and researchers already present in the FLAGSHIPS programmes are also eligible. Selected projects should be integrated into FLAGSHIPS programmes as partnership projects.

The NRJ-Institut de France Foundation is launching a call for applications for its 2021 scientific prize. The theme chosen for this year is "Physiopathology of infections of the nervous system".

Call for nominations for the Eppendorf Prize 2021
The Eppendorf Prize for Young European Researchers rewards outstanding contributions to biomedical research based on molecular biology methods, including new analytical concepts.
Candidates must be based in Europe and not older than 35 years of age.

"Assembly of European or International Scientific Networks (MRSEI), Edition 2021
The ANR has just published its MRSEI 2021 call to support the setting up of European and international projects in coordination.
The selected projects receive a maximum grant of 30 k€ for a maximum duration of 24 months to support the setting up of the project (i.e. travel, organisation of meetings, consultancy...).

Chroniques - Biennale des imaginaires numériques
NeuroMarseille and the association Arts Vivants Aix have chosen to combine art and science.
For the 2020 edition, the jury has selected two works resulting from the meeting of art and science to subsidize them. Anne-Marie Renan, painter, and Jesùs Tamez-Duque, multidisciplinary artist and technology developer subsidized by NeuroMarseille, propose to record the waves that make our brains vibrate in front of the beautiful and moving. Fabien Léaustic, researcher and plastic artist, has chosen to sculpt DNA.
