NeuroMarseille day: exceptional gathering of the community

NeuroMarseille invites the neuroscience community on Thursday, June 29th - 2023, for a scientific and convivial day of gathering: no better way to put the institute's actions into perspective!

Once a year, let's all meet!

Throughout the year, NeuroMarseille concentrates on reinforcing the visibility and interconnection of neuroscience in Marseille: European partnerships, grants dedicated to innovative and collaborative research, actions for and by students, and animation of the community with events… This dynamic has led us to a good level of cohesion and competence. Once a year, we are delighted to bring the community together for an enriching day: this year, the highlight is undoubtedly the lecture by Prof. Hongkui Zeng, Executive Vice President and Director of the Allen Institute for Brain Science. However, you should also be interested in a wide range of workshops, debates or short seminars such as the ones given by the 2021 ICR grant winners. This event is meant to be a friendly one, a rare moment where the whole neuroscientific community of Marseille can meet: the lunch buffet offered by our host, INMED, will be the place to enjoy each other’s company. The students we welcome as part of our NeuroSchool programme are not to be outdone: some are part of the organisation, especially for the soiree! A meeting with Prof. Zeng is specially dedicated to them, but they are invited to participate in the other day’s events.

Join us to enjoy this transversal and unifying day:

Debate

Are animal models valid for studying human behaviour?

With

Mira Didic – INS,

Thomas Marissal – INMED, David Robbe – INMED, Daniele Schon – INS,

5:00 pm – 6:00 pm – Technosport gymnase

This session will allow you to validate one hour of animal skills maintenance

Thanks to their ease of manipulation, animal models are widely used in attempts to understand human cognitive functions and their neural bases under normal or pathological conditions. Numerous behavioral tests have been developed to measure these functions in animal models. This is a robust way of understanding the mechanisms of behavior at the level of synapses, cells, or circuits.

However, many questions remain to be answered: to what extent are human cognitive functions transferable to animals, and conversely, to what time can observations made in animal models really be extrapolated to humans and patients? What tests are traditionally used to measure a given cognitive function in animals? Are these tests really adapted to animals? To what extent can these observations be “noised” by parameters that are often neglected (motivation, anxiety, perception, motor function)? How can we avoid carrying out a kind of model-specific phenotyping, uncorrelated with humans?

We’ll be discussing these points with NeuroMarseille’s neurobiology and cognitive neuroscience researchers, who specialize in animal or human behavior, in physiological conditions or neurological disease. This debate can be counted in the maintenance of skills in animal experimentation, since one of its objectives is to reduce and refine our use of animal models (i.e., use fewer animals, but in tests more adapted to the question asked).

David Karlin – A collaboration gone wrong can ruin your career (and your sanity). The US Office of Research Integrity wrote about collaborations: “We are struck by how many disputes could have been avoided if only the collaborators had taken a few precautionary steps at the outset”. Did you know for example that the main source of disputes comes from not having agreed in advance on the format of the shared data or samples? In this course, you will learn how to assess whether the interests of your prospective collaborator are aligned with yours, and what to agree on (and how) before collaborating. It will spare you 80% of the problems that occur in c

Cocktail & Concert
