Investigating the quality of sensorimotor representation in typically and atypically developing infants engaged in acquisition of independent walking.

This PhD research program aims at investigating the emerging neural mechanisms underlying the action-perception coupling and the building of sensorimotor representations in typically and atypically developing infants engaged in acquisition of independent walking.

Description

We plan to test 30 full-term (FTI) and 30 preterm (PTI) children longitudinally during crucial steps in their first year of walking experience (early, 3, 6, and 12 months of walking experience). Walking abilities will be assessed by kinematic analysis to quantify motor improvements in each participant. These individual kinematic recordings will be used to create visual stimuli of moving point light based on each participant’s own walking experience. Using these individual motion stimuli, we plan to test the quality of perception-action coupling with eye-tracking recording and mu EEG rhythm desynchronization that is thought to reflect MNS activity (Fox et al. 2016; Filippi et al. 2016; Montirosso et al, 2019).
