Private research

NeuroSchool is developing a network of private partners to initiate meetings between students and entrepreneurs, and to promote R&D internships.

NeuroSchool is developing a network of private partners to initiate meetings between students and entrepreneurs, and to promote R&D internships. Companies benefit from our students’ knowledge and research skills, while students gain experience in both research and business.

Collaborations with the private sector

Master students can already carry out internships in biotechnology companies. NeuroSchool also offers doctoral scholarships to PhD students, in collaboration with the private sector.

We are also in the process of setting up new courses on the creation and management of biotech companies in collaboration with specialized institutes (such as the Aix-Marseille School of Management) and NeuroSchool’s three industrial partners:

VECT-HORUS

Transporting therapeutic and imaging agents into the brain using an innovative targeting technology.

NeuroServices Alliance

Central nervous system CRO for translational data.

OZ Biosciences

To create, develop and produce innovative molecular delivery systems specialized in transfection and transduction tools for the global scientific community and the pharmaceutical industry.

Other neuroscience-related companies

There are other companies that can accommodate neuroscience students in Aix, Marseille and the surrounding area:

How can your company interact with us?

Our PhD students are always eager to learn more about R&D. Our PhD program organizes meetings with entrepreneurs, scientists and other R&D personnel. Share your experience and give our students a concrete example of private neuroscience research.

Of course, your company can also recruit future employees from among our graduates! Send us your offers for us to post them in our LinkedIn group, or check out our next call for tenders: NeuroSchool could pay the salary of your next postdoc!

You can also pay us the apprenticeship tax so that our students get an even better education!

Post-doc fellowship in a company

Every year, NeuroSchool launches a call for post-doctoral fellowships for young AMU neuroscience PhD graduates who wish to work in a biotechnology company specializing in neuroscience in the Sud region.

The main objective of these scholarships is to promote the professional integration of young doctors.

Nathalie Py

(thesis defended on 16/12/2014) talks about her one-year experience as an engineer in a start-up company thanks to funding from the PhD program (reserved for PhD graduates from AMU).

Why did you apply for this competition?

"First of all I would like to stress that connecting young doctors with local companies is a very good idea. It opens up an additional opportunity for doctors who may not be able or willing to move far away.

For me in this case, this scholarship was a good opportunity because I was already interested in the themes developed within the NeuronExpert company. When I found out that they were participating in the ICN post-doctoral fellowship program, I did not hesitate to apply. Especially since this fellowship allowed me to discover and enter the private sector while having the possibility to change paths at the end of the contract if it didn't suit me".

Did you encounter any difficulties?

"So I started my contract at the beginning of May 2015 at NeuronExpert. It wasn't easy at first because the stakes are very different between the public and private sectors, especially for a company that does more service than basic research. There is more pressure and I had a little trouble keeping up with this new pace. I started on a project that began a few months earlier in collaboration with Dr. Frédérique Magdinier's team from UMR-S910 based at Timone. The challenge was to develop new cellular models of neurodegenerative diseases, starting from human stem cells, which were not developed within the company until I was recruited on the ICN PhD program competition".

A rewarding experience?

"For the needs of the company, I learned from Timone's IPS platform how to cultivate induced pluripotent stem cells (IPS) and how to differentiate them into different types of progenitors.

Thanks to this funding, I have greatly developed my skills in cell culture.

Currently, I am still based on Timone within UMR-S910 where I have the technology and know-how to grow and differentiate hIPS cells in good conditions. I can thus provide NeuronExperts with the different types of neuronal cells they need for testing molecules sent in by their clients".

What about the future?

"I've just been recruited by NeuronExperts on a mission contract, to continue to provide them with these cells and also develop new models always using hIPS cells."
